Visitor Center Numbers High for Summer Season

Wyoming’s state-run visitors are showing an increase in visitation of 34.5% this year.

Of the seven gateway centers into Wyoming, the state helps operate five of these including the Southeast Wyoming Welcome Center, Northeast Wyoming Welcome Center, Summit Welcome Center, Bear River State Park and Welcome Center, and Sheridan Welcome Center.

The new Southeast Wyoming Welcome Center accounts for 117.8% in growth making for an additional 28,972 visitors since January. Numbers for the southeast center are showing a weekly increase of between 30% to 115% since mid-May. This will be the first peak season in the new, interactive center.

The other four centers are showing year over year growth ranging from 7% to 24%.

There has been a steady push for more attention to Wyoming’s one-of-a-kind visitor centers. Promotional campaigns were incorporated in the centers using both the Wyoming Travelers Journal and the consumer website to push to the centers as part of Wyoming Office of Tourism’s summer campaign. The campaign encourages visitors to visit various visitor centers throughout the state to get a Great American Road Trip sticker. The stickers highlight different attractions around the state--each visitor center with a collection of stickers based on location. Studies show that once visitors go to a visitor center there is a direct correlation with incremental stay.

“Since the campaign launched, we are seeing that most weeks that we are doubling our numbers from the previous,” says Wyoming Office of Tourism Visitor Services Manager Shannon Stanfill of the Southeast Wyoming Welcome Center numbers.

“We’re really excited to see people taking advantage of the centers as a way to find out more about what they can do on their Wyoming vacation.”

Along with the Great American Road Trip Campaign, people visiting welcome centers are encouraged to participate in WOT’s road trip challenge where people can submit their favorite road trip for a chance to win the ultimate Wyoming road trip. Learn more about the road trip challenge at
