Past Governmental Affairs Positions, October 2006
Beside the issues of adequate funding for the Division of Tourism and maintaining the local option lodging tax system, the following process is approved for the WTIC to take a positioni for other government issues. Any member should write a one page summary and make a five minute presentation at a Board meeting. The proposal will be distributed to the membership with a six week response time if possible. Members will be asked to vote on whether or not WTIC should endorse the position, oppose it or take no position. No position will be approved without a 51% approval vote of the membership.
Some of the examples of legislative position held by the WTIC include:
1995
WTIC supports via video conference stable or additional funding for the Wyoming Division of Tourism in order that an adequate tourism promotion program be maintained for Wyoming.
1995
WTIC supports the local option lodging tax if at least 90% is committed to promotion. WTIC currently opposes any changes to the local option lodging tax.
1997
WTIC, in a straw poll at a general meeting of 40 people, voted to support Representative Clarene Law's concept of amending the lodging tax law to allow the first $1 million to be used as proscribed by current law with monies above that being apportioned differently. A similar law was passed in the 1998 legislative session.
1998
WTIC endorsed the actions of YORS (Yellowstone Outdoor Recreation Association) in opposing the proposed total ban of snowmobiling. WTIC should also keep the membership updated on National Park, BLM and U.S. Forest Service activities. Motion passed unanimously.
2000
WTIC supports the continued use of snowmobiles in national parks and opposes any total bans.
2000-2001
WTIC supports additional funding for the Wyoming Division of Tourism in the least to replace additional advertising money spent to offset negative publicity from the fires of summer 2000.
2002-2003
WTIC supports the footnote creating a Governor appointed tourism board within the Wyoming Business Council.
